Celebrating Women in the Artificial Intelligence Field
International Women's Day is a time to celebrate the achievements of women and raise awareness about the ongoing struggle for gender equality. This year, we want to take a moment to highlight the contributions of women in the rapidly growing field of artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence is a rapidly evolving field that has the potential to transform the world in many ways. It is also a field that is traditionally male-dominated, with women often underrepresented in leadership positions and technical roles. However, despite these challenges, there are many women making important contributions to the field of artificial intelligence. One of the biggest areas where women are making an impact in AI is in the development of ethical AI.
Opinion: The artificial intelligence field is infected with hype. Here's how not to get duped
The star of the show at Tesla's annual "AI Day" (for "artificial intelligence") on Sept 30 was a humanoid robot introduced by Tesla chief executive Elon Musk as "Optimus." The robot could walk, if gingerly, and perform a few repetitive mechanical tasks like waving its arms and wielding a watering can over plant boxes. The demo was greeted enthusiastically by the several hundred engineers in the audience, many of whom hoped to land a job with Tesla. "This means a future of abundance," Musk proclaimed from the stage. "A future where there is no poverty.... It really is a fundamental transformation of civilisation as we know it."

We still don't have a learning paradigm that allows machines to learn how the world works, like human and many non-human babies do. Robotics experts watching remotely were less impressed. "Not mind-blowing" was the sober judgment of Christian Hubicki of Florida State University. Some AI experts were even less charitable. "The event was quite the dud," Ben Shneiderman of the University of Maryland told me. Among other shortcomings, Musk failed to articulate a coherent use case for the robot -- that is, what would it do? You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times. To Shneiderman and others in the AI field, the Tesla demo embodied some of the worst qualities of AI hype; its reduction to humanoid characters, its exorbitant promises, its promotion by self-interested entrepreneurs and its suggestion that AI systems or devices can function autonomously, without human guidance, to achieve results that outmatch human capacities. "When news articles uncritically repeat PR statements, overuse images of robots, attribute agency to AI tools, or downplay their limitations, they mislead and misinform readers about the potential and limitations of AI," Sayash Kapoor and Arvind Narayanan wrote in a checklist of AI reporting pitfalls posted online the very day of the Tesla demo. "When we talk about AI," Kapoor says, "we tend to say things like'AI is doing X -- artificial intelligence is grading your homework,' for instance.

How to build your career in Artificial Intelligence?
When you start learning a new skill, the first thing is to look at the big picture and where your would-be skills fit in the field. It gives you a context of what role you can play or are expected to play. And when the skill and field are evolving & overwhelmingly large, you are so engrossed in the details that most probably you tend to miss the purpose. In my view, to understand the big picture, ask yourself'why' more often and start with the end in your mind. The following analogy is not particularly about artificial intelligence but in general.

Can Artificial Intelligence Generate Corporate Strategy?
In this article, I'm going to tell you about automating corporate strategies using artificial intelligence, and look at some recent progress in automatically generating strategies in the face of uncertainty. Every day, progress in artificial intelligence is addressing tasks currently performed only by humans, and it's worthwhile to take a short-term view of what this all means to your company. Games like chess have been tackled by artificial intelligence with amazing results, but there was this big gap between those games - where everything about the game state and consequences is known before making a decision - and the reality of life where, like poker, there is only a little bit of information available to the decision-makers, and the quality and quantity of information used to make decisions varies wildly. We humans face this situation of high uncertainty every time we cross the street or eat a hamburger, but it doesn't seem to bother us. Until recently, computers have had a lot of trouble dealing with games that give the decision-maker incomplete information about the state of the game.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in a Startup Eco-System
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies deliver intelligent functionalities to pre-existing solutions across various verticals including automotive, health care and business analytics. AI and ML collectively offer optimal solutions to the existing problem, and further imparting self-learning logic in the system to instinctively address any similar complications in the future. Statistic abilities of machine learning to develop capabilities and enhance the performance of models have delivered significant traction for the technology in start-ups across the world. Companies are highly attracted to the investment opportunities for integrating machine learning in their services and products across the AI landscape. These unprecedented stages of investment are emblematic of the hype surrounding artificial intelligence and machine learning and have also accentuated the value that technology leaders believe AI and ML can bring to the world.

500 Emirati men and women in first batch to be trained in artificial intelligence field
The first 500 Emirati men and women will soon start their training in artificial intelligence as the UAE looks to begin shaping its future in a field that is expected to soon touch every company and individual on the planet. The students' training is part of an agreement signed by Oracle and the Higher Colleges of Technology on Sunday to prepare young UAE nationals youth for the country's future jobs. Oracle is also discussing with the university ways to develop AI-related degrees. "We're focusing on research and development in technology as well as providing the necessary support and training for local youth," said Omar Al Olama, Minister of Artificial Intelligence, at the launch in Dubai. "Most importantly, we are focusing on utilising emerging technologies in public services to enhance day-to-day experiences of UAE citizens and increase the efficiency of the government and private sectors. We hope to see the positive effects of these technologies in the coming years."

Natural intelligence: 27-year-old is rising star in artificial intelligence field
Two-year-old DemandJump Inc. is one of the area's hottest startups--and it had a 2016 that many startups would kill for. Last year, the Indianapolis-based company won two TechPoint Mira awards (often called the Oscars of Indiana tech), was a finalist for the prestigious Red Herring Top 100 Global award, added former Wal-Mart marketing chief Julie Lyle to its team, and secured an investment from Boston-based venture capital heavyweight Bob Davoli. The 17-person company, which targets marketers with its artificial intelligence software, has not raised a ton of money--about $2.6 million so far. But it's approaching $1 million in annualized revenue with a product that's been on the market only nine months. And the company has caught the attention of research firms Forrester and Intelligentsia.
